Glurch the Abominous Mass Glurch is, indeed, a large mass of slime. This boss can be found by digging down and to the left from the core. When you start seeing orange oozes and slime, you’re on the right track.
Killing Glurch spawns a chest with a few random items and a crystal. Take all of the items (and the chest!), then put the crystal in Glurch's statue near the Core. This will partially power the Core and open up a few new crafting recipes at the Glurch statue.

So I'm surprised how comfortable it is being perpetually underground in Core Keeper. Part of it is the charming art and animation, along with the dynamic lighting effects. I think the biggest praise I can give to the game is that I cannot wait to dig into it with a few friends over the coming weeks. It's the kind of game you can slowly chip away at over several evenings and the hardcore mode even offers some replayability down the line.
